Bowling Tale

my latest work about a story told in a bowling alley about the second world world. the script was given and we have to continue the story after he went into the cockpit. i love the finishing of the final piece since i have been spending 1 hours for each panel but i have lots of fun! we went ot the mighty eight museum for this project, we see the life size of F 18 over there which i have to draw in the script but i found out later that the pathway of the F 18 in the museum is too "clean" ,it was impossible to be empty during the war, so i have to have alternative research for that part. beside that, i also bought a little F 18 model in the museum which cost me 4 dollars for reference~ i have lots of ref for this project, espeacially the bowling alley was so much harder to draw than i ever imagine~~ hope you enjoy!

Sweet Misses Plumbottom in a Victorian manor

"Sweet Misses Plumbottom in a Victorian manor" is the title.

Here and There Street

A new piece of artwork inspired by the underground artist Robert Crumb. i like how the way he treats every object that he draw as if they are all alive and also i love the way he uses dots and simple hatching to create texture and value! to add on, you will never see a perfect straight line in crumb's drawing ,they look organic and lively. Hope you may see these influences in this drawing~ i really have fun in this work! yeah!

saxaphone player and new york scene~

Both of this is a work for my drawing for sequential art, they are more like illustration drawings to me. however, the project is based on a city, Savannah and New york in this case( i hope it is clear enough...) The top one, is located at river street at savannah where a old sax player perform together with his grand daughter.
The second one is based on new york, central park. i have never been there before but we are given some photographes for refrence and the story is just about this girl waiting for somebody( the guy behind~), it is like a date~
hope you like it ~ enjoy!

mom's book

My mom used to live in a poor family when she is young. She did a autobiography about her primary school life when she is a teenager, mentioning about the school life, what happen in her family when they are so poor, her friendship in school, the teacher she respect and other experiences. It is very personal but it appear in the newspaper back then, episode by episode. She consider herself as a writer back then. After many year, mom decided to republish the book again on better paper with better illustration. These illustration i posted here were the second time i draw for her, she always gets too busy to deal with them so i redraw them as i improve. Hopping one day the book will be seen on those racks in the book stores. By all means, mom didnt seek for fame or money from this book but just want to fulfill her little dream.

Love you mom!

My high school works!

these are all my high school works back then. To me, they still look good to me, they look free, creative, dynamic, and fun. maybe back then my mind was not filled up by all the art theories and rules, i was just drawing for the sake of drawing. i enjoy each of them very much and they have their own personal stories. i hope i can always appreciate the passion i always have with comic and illustration, looking at these old works keep my spirit high!

old freelancejob

A male and a female elephant, i hope every will not have trouble depicting their gender... this is a sample work which i did many years ago for a freelance job. Although it didn't use it for publishing but i like them anyway, maybe is because of the style, more painterly cartoon.

This is another freelance piece for the same guy. The story came for a saying in Chinese which translates as you will be regret when you turn old if you does n't work hard now. As you can see, the boy did not study well when he is young and he end up living beside the trash can... haha.. the idea is a bit exaggerated but lesson to children always need to be clear and concise, only then they will able to remember it. At least this is the way i was taught. YOU WILL EAT GARBBAGE NEXT TIME IF YOU DONT WORK HARD NOW!

ah..... i don't want to eat garbage....

Revisiting the Apple

Today, i was giving a chance to paint an apple again. i remember i did this practice 3 years ago which i did it awfully bad. Now, i think i did improve abit somehow, the apple look eatable i think... anyhow, i enjoy painting the apple, i might do it another time in future to see how much i improve over year~ as i m taking the digital coloring course, more coloring work will be coming up, enough of the black and white... hehe

Something from Jacky cheung that i found it interesting, he said he like to eat apple because the juice of an apple is just like the saliva of human being and i find it true too~

God bless you~

Starry starry night~

This is my last project for Visual Storytelling class. The given scenario is you heard a sound in midnight, then you wake up and check on your cellphone but the battery is dead then you heard another louder sound. This time the noise must make you jump, you grab a weapon then you open the door and you see.... that story is wide open from here.

when i received this, i did some brainstorming to generate different ideas and i end up with this. entering into an artist world. the few choices that consider are Picasso, Edward Munch, Dali and Van Gogh. I picked Van Gogh in the end maybe because of the sentimental value i have for his paintings, especially Starry starry night and i also came across the song Vincent. After some research on him, i found out the sad and depressing background of this man. The sentence that inspires me is " only if he knows it". Only if Van Gogh knows his painting is selling for millions and his works are great inspiration to the 20th century artist.... so i hope to make this come true through my comic by doing something like meeting Van Gogh in my dreams.

It's a fun project overall and we were asked to change our style from what we use to do. i found out that most people did better with their unfamiliar style for this project, this is interesting~ maybe we tend to be too confident with what we have and when we are push to do something that we never think of, we explore stuff~

Journey

The topic is JOURNEY and i have to write a script that interprets a journey. When I was wondering around looking for ideas, i went into a bird shop near Boos in a Million. The way Americans deal with birds is different from Asia, they don't JAIL the bird in a cage but just leave food on some sort of stand to allow wild birds to eat themselves, then they just observer from far. i htink i prefer this way of treating the birds, nobody like to be caged...

However, the shop motives me to do a comic about Birds so i come up with this 2 page story about a Black faced spoonbill and a Platypus. You might ask why i choose two of these birds( Platypus is not a bird btw...) because i think they look somehow alike and the story is about the spoonbill adopted the platypus.

The comment that i receive is both of the birds look too alike, it is difficult to differentiate them in some of the panels... maybe i should consider first about the clarity for the reader... but i still enjoy a lot of the weird combination...

VAMPIRES!!

An outraged female vampire holding on to another male vampire which is about to die. this is the scenery I'm given. it was fun to draw vampire, especially female vampire~ im quite OK with the Pencil version of it but i screw up the color version.... too bad to even show it... sad.. maybe i ll do a digital color version in future!

Modern dancers in tokyo market place

I m given the combiation :

Tokyo market place + Modern Dancers + One vehicle

and this is what i do~ having fun doing the scooter in front since i own one myself, it i always better to own the reference itself, i can do what ever i want to observe it.

Live drawing

There is a big live drawing session last year when lots of models dressed in fun and weird clothes for us to draw. this is what i did for a pirate character and i won a third place for the best character! they give me a $10 worth Exlibris card which i haven't use it until now... maybe i ll collect lots of them and use them at once!!! hehe

Perspective drawings

These are my old stuff that i do it for the class Drawing for Storyboard class. They come in the order of three , two and one point perspective drawing~

i enjoy doing them very much , hope you like it too!

My House

this is what i draw after i watch Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle. i love the animation, i love the musics and i love the designs of characters!! maybe not the story... dont quite get it though...
anyway, i have fun doing this~ enjoy!

it could be fun to live in a house like this, i think my head will be overflowing with inspiration!

Monster invade!!

Fly me to the moon

sketches for my comic

is just fun to post theses sketches because they are the begining of my work, it will be wasteful to keep them myself~ btw, i think they are far more dynamic than my finals~

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

this is one of my project for visual storytelling, the script is from Static Shock, a cartoon animated series. the point is i have never watch the animation before i take this project so i have to thought out everything myself~ is kinda fun after i finished it and compare with the animation. One thing I discovered in this class is that comis is not as easy as what i thought! i read comic since i was 8 years old but i never thought that creating them can be a painful! no matter is the script or the artwork, it requires so much thinking process and careful planning. As a Illustation student for 3 years, i m really struggling throught this but at the brighter side, i learn tons of stuff that i will never learn in illustration. The way to communicate your idea with visual is definately a knowledge and i m learning seriously now.

OLYMPUS Stylus 1010, is the name... i found her at the closing sale at curcuit city last week, but they was out of stock for this model... sad... but at least i do play and try it myself to make a decision to get it from amazon later~ it is the first timei own a camera, hehe... i will appreciate it very much ~ i ejoy taking picture and looking at photography books, they are truely inspiring and motivating. the link below is a blog of a friend of mine, his picture always inspired me and gives warmth feeling in to the heart, i hope that i can make time still like him~

my scooter

This is a imaginary drawing of my scooter... trust me... is not that cool... but i enjoy riding it to college daily, feels like im some professional doing some stuns~ hehe.
When i was small, riding a motorcycle was totally forbidden because my dad to me that your flesh is protecting the metal instead of the metal protect you...
是皮包铁,不是铁包皮...
Dad, im sorry that i go against your advise but i will always be aware while im on the road. Is cool to ride a bike but it hurt when you knock on something....

happy new year 2009

is chinese new year today, but nobody care here in Savannah... but the chinese students gathered around in a small apartment and celebrated themselves. it is another kind of fun i guess where we all get to appreciate what we have in our hometown. i miss my family during festival like this but i need to make my way up in the state, i hope they can be proud of me in future,so it is not the time to play or celebrate but to be serious and work! you gotta be crazy in what you do in order to be successful. i m not use to be a writhing person but recently i found out that, i get to encourage myself thought writing like this because it like me to myself~ hehe... hope i ll keep up the good habit of recording my daily life.

today, i just watch Shin chan- the adult empire strike back! i never expect it to be so touching since it use to sell silly joke and funny characters~. anyone who reads this, watch it if you have the time : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3gkw9x40iM&feature=PlayList&p=04609EAD0245679A&playnext=1&index=6
